The Nevada Governor’s Office for New Americans (ONA) released a list of its achievements and accomplishments during 2022. In Nevada, 1 in 5 residents identify as an immigrant or refugee. ONA completed 161 casework cases in fiscal year of 2022, a 200% growth in constituent services from FY 2021. Through its Skilled Immigrant Integration Program (SIIP), the Office works with community partners to facilitate the pathways for skilled immigrants and refugee population who have international experience, education, and training o access work opportunities in Nevada.
In June, ONA and Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada hosted an inaugural Nevada Newcomer Health Forum in Southern Nevada. The forum brought together over 65 healthcare provides, community partners, and stakeholders who provided community input with the goal of seeking out collective measures for improving our State’s current refugee healthcare continuum and promoting health equity for Nevada’s newcomer communities. To improve diversity, equity, and inclusion, ONA led the implementation of Senate Bill 222, working alongside the Nevada Office of Minority Health and Equity and Nevada Commission on Minority Affairs. The Bill requires a state agency to collaborate with minority groups and provide certain information to minority groups and require these offices to facilitate an annual meeting between diversity and inclusion liaisons and minority groups and submit a report to the Governor and the Legislative Commission.
ONA also launched the New American Voices Initiative monthly roundtable discussions with directly impacted communities, stakeholder groups and state partners addressing the needs of Nevada’s immigrant and refugee families.
In addition, ONA has been working with refugee resettlement agencies on programs such as Afghan Placement Program, Uniting for Ukraine Initiative and Cuban Entrant Orientations.
