Las Vegas Rotary Rallies Support for Wildfire-Stricken Maui

Las Vegas NV — The Las Vegas Rotary Club is stepping up to help residents of Maui impacted by the recent wildfire disaster that ravaged the island late last week, stripping many of their homes and livelihood.

In response to this catastrophic event, the Rotary Club of Las Vegas is calling upon the generosity and solidarity of Las Vegas residents, businesses and fellow citizens to lend a helping hand by donating to its Maui Fires Relief Fund.

"We possess the power to act immediately and make impactful change,” said Mark Mirriam, District Governor Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu. “In our collective journey of recovery and renewal. Let us forge a beacon of hope, igniting the spirit of Maui through our concerted efforts."

Through the Rotary District 5000 Foundation, a 501c3 organization, a relief fund has been established and all donations are considered charitable. Foundation President Dave Hamil and Treasurer Sharon Amano will handle and distribute donations to the Rotary Clubs of Maui and Lahaina.

Officials said the unprecedented disaster that swept through Maui has reached a death toll of 89 and counting, with Hawaii Gov. Josh Green cautioning that it was likely to continue to grow. The devastating fire becomes the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history, surpassing the 2018 Camp Fire in California that killed 85.

“Lahaina, with a few rare exceptions, has been burned down," Green said last Thursday following a tour of the devastation. "Without a doubt, it feels like a bomb was dropped on Lahaina."
