Nevada Approves Community Recovery Grants for Local Non-Profits

On June 21, the Nevada Interim Finance Committee approved another set of Community Recovery Grants to support local nonprofits. Grants approved include:

  • $3 million was awarded to the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows to support the Kidswell Program. The Kidswell Program is designed to mitigate the trauma and learning loss children have experienced in the last two years. The Kidswell Program will utilize evidence-based and evidence-informed programs including the Summer BrainGain, Positive Action, and Project Learn to provide additional academic and social-emotional support to approximately 10,000 youth aged 6-18 in nine Nevada counties.  
  • $10,000 was awarded to Churchill Community Hospital to support the Patients in Need project. The funding will help provide transportation to enable financially and socially vulnerable individuals get access to healthcare.
  • $1.4 million was awarded to both Spread the Word Nevada and the Northern Nevada Literacy Council to fund programs to address literacy and learning loss. Spread the Word Nevada was approved to receive $1.08 million to increase the quantity of books that PreK to 5th Grade students have in their homes to increase at-home reading time. Northern Nevada Literacy Council was approved to receive $329,454 for ten part-time instructors for their outreach program expansion into Northern Nevada’s rural communities to provide classes toward high school equivalency and English literacy.
  • $152,000 was awarded to Community Health Development Foundation to provide case management, identification of community wellness needs and care coordination. The Community Health Development Foundation will implement a patient navigation system and provide an experienced patient navigator to help identify community needs, connect patients to appropriate resources and provide case management services for communities facing challenges navigating systems in place to address hardships.
  • $539,000 to Culinary Academy Las Vegas to fund industry-developed skills training for underserved and displaced workers to help establish quality, long-term employment in the hospitality industry in Las Vegas.
